Make room for the walk
Walking time calculator
Estimate moving time from your route distance and walking speed, then allow extra time for stops.
Based on your inputs
20
minutes moving
- 1.61kilometres
- 3 mphyour speed
1 mi at 3 mph. Stops and breaks are not included.
Distance estimates depend on step length. A measured value improves the estimate.
Minutes = distance in miles ÷ speed in mph × 60
Turn distance into a duration
Enter the walking distance and an expected speed. The calculator divides distance by speed to estimate the time spent moving. Matching units matters: a distance in miles pairs with miles per hour, while a distance in kilometres pairs with kilometres per hour.
A one-mile walk at the example speed of 3 mph takes 20 minutes of moving time. At 2 mph it takes 30 minutes. The 3 mph starting value is an illustration, not a claim about everybody's comfortable pace. Use a speed that reflects your own route and conditions.
Moving time is not door-to-door time
The result assumes continuous movement at the selected speed. Road crossings, waiting for others, photographs, breaks, and getting to the start all add to the time on the clock. A route with hills or a difficult surface may also take longer than an equally long flat path.
When planning an appointment or a connection, allow for those delays separately. If you have walked a similar route before, your recorded moving pace can provide a useful input. Avoid relying on a generic speed when the timing is important.
Plan from steps when you need to
If you know your step count but not your distance, first convert steps to miles or kilometres using a measured step length. Then use that distance here. Keep in mind that this adds a second assumption: an estimated distance followed by an estimated speed. The answer is helpful for planning, but it should not be read as a precise arrival forecast.
How long does it take to walk a mile?
About 20 minutes at 3 mph, which is a common steady walking pace on level ground. At a gentle 2.5 mph a mile takes 24 minutes; at a brisk 4 mph, 15 minutes. Those are moving times: crossings, hills and stops all add to the clock.
The same division answers any distance. Two miles at 3 mph is 40 minutes, three miles an hour, five miles an hour and 40 minutes. For a step count rather than a distance, 10,000 steps at a 30-inch step is 4.73 miles, so about 95 minutes at 3 mph.
Speed, pace and time
This calculator works from speed in mph or km/h. If you think in pace, 3 mph is 20 minutes per mile and 4 mph is 15 minutes per mile; the pace calculator converts any speed into minutes per mile and per kilometre. Once you have a speed, time is distance divided by speed: three miles at 3 mph is one hour of moving time.
A few useful answers
Walking time: questions, answered.
How long does it take to walk one mile?
At 3 mph it takes 20 minutes of moving time. At 2 mph it takes 30 minutes, and at 4 mph it takes 15 minutes.
Does the estimate include breaks?
No. It estimates continuous moving time. Add time for crossings, rest stops, and other delays separately.
Can I plan a hilly route with this tool?
You can enter a speed that reflects the route, but the calculator does not automatically adjust for elevation, terrain, or weather.
How long does it take to walk a mile?
About 20 minutes at 3 mph. How long to walk a mile depends on pace: 24 minutes at 2.5 mph, 15 minutes at 4 mph. The average time to walk a mile for most adults falls in that 15-to-24-minute band.
How long does it take to walk 10,000 steps?
About 95 minutes at 3 mph, because 10,000 steps at a 30-inch step is 4.73 miles. How long to walk 10,000 steps at a gentler 2.5 mph is closer to 114 minutes.
