7 mph to minutes per mile, and any other speed
Used as a mile pace calculator, this tool answers in both directions. Pace is the time for one unit of distance, so it is the reciprocal of speed. Sixty minutes divided by 7 mph is 8.57 minutes per mile, which is 8 minutes 34 seconds. The same arithmetic in metric: 7 mph is 11.27 km/h, so 60 ÷ 11.27 gives 5 minutes 20 seconds per kilometre.
Treadmills and GPS watches usually show speed; race plans and running logs usually use pace. The calculator above converts in either direction and shows both mile and kilometre pace so you can compare a treadmill setting with a route outdoors.
Typical walking speeds as pace
A leisurely 2.5 mph is 24 minutes per mile. Three miles per hour, the example speed used across this site, is 20 minutes per mile or 12 minutes 26 seconds per kilometre. A brisk 4 mph is 15 minutes per mile. The table below lists whole-number speeds from 2 to 8 mph so you can see where a treadmill setting or a fitness-tracker average falls.
