10,000 steps × 30 in per step. Distance and time are estimates.

Distance estimates depend on step length. A measured value improves the estimate.

Miles = steps × step length in inches ÷ 63,360

Popular step counts in miles

Each page shows the distance, the range for your step length, walking time and a calorie estimate.

How to convert steps into miles

Enter the number of steps, then enter the length of one step. The calculator multiplies those values to find total distance and converts that distance to miles. Choose inches or centimetres to match your measurement. The conversion factors are fixed; the uncertainty comes from how closely the step length represents your walk.

With the example 30-inch step length, 10,000 steps cover approximately 4.73 miles. A shorter step produces a shorter distance for the same count. A longer step produces a longer distance. This is why a single steps-per-mile number cannot fit every person or every walk.

A better input makes a better estimate

Measure a route whose distance you know, walk it naturally, and count both feet. Divide the route distance by the number of steps. A longer, repeatable measurement is more useful than measuring one carefully placed footfall. Try the process a few times and use the combined distance divided by the combined count.

Keep the conditions in mind. A brisk outdoor walk, a slow indoor day, and a steep trail can involve different step lengths. For a whole-day count, the result is a practical approximation across many different movements.

Use miles to plan the next walk

Distance can make a goal easier to picture. Compare your result with a familiar local loop or use the reverse calculator to estimate the steps in a route you already know. If you also want a duration, enter a realistic walking speed. That time represents moving time and does not include crossings, rest stops, or other delays.

How many steps are in a mile?

Divide 63,360 (the inches in a mile) by your step length in inches. A 30-inch step gives 2,112 steps per mile; a 26-inch step gives 2,437 and a 34-inch step gives 1,864. The widely quoted “2,000 steps per mile” assumes a step of 31.7 inches. The table below shows the steps-per-mile figure for common step lengths, and the calculator above uses whichever length you enter.

26 in (66.0 cm)2,4371,514

Convert steps to miles without a calculator

Multiply the step count by your step length in inches and divide by 63,360. For 12,000 steps and a 29-inch step: 12,000 × 29 = 348,000 inches, and 348,000 ÷ 63,360 = 5.49 miles. For kilometres, multiply the count by the step length in centimetres and divide by 100,000. The popular-count pages linked above show the working for specific totals, from 2,000 to 40,000 steps.

A few useful answers

Steps to miles: questions, answered.

How many miles are 10,000 steps?

At the illustrative step length of 30 inches, 10,000 steps are about 4.73 miles. Change the step length to see your own estimate.

How many steps make one mile?

Divide 63,360 inches by your step length in inches. A 30-inch step gives 2,112 steps per mile. This is an example, not a universal average.

Should I enter step length or stride length?

Enter one step: the distance from one footfall to the next footfall of the opposite foot. A full stride is the distance between successive footfalls of the same foot and normally contains two steps.

How many steps are in a mile?

About 2,112 at a 30-inch step, 2,437 at 26 inches and 1,864 at 34 inches. Divide 63,360 by your own step length in inches for a personal figure.
