Distance estimates depend on step length. A measured value improves the estimate.

Steps = miles × 63,360 ÷ step length in inches

Popular distances in steps

Each page shows the step count, the range for your step length, walking time and a calorie estimate.

Start with the route you know

Enter the distance in miles and the length of one walking step. The calculator converts the route to inches, then divides by your step length. It rounds the estimated count to a whole step so the result is easy to use. The underlying calculation retains the precision needed for the conversion.

For example, a one-mile route contains 63,360 inches. At a 30-inch step length, that works out to 2,112 steps. The same route takes more steps with shorter footfalls and fewer steps with longer ones. The starting step length is an illustration, not a standard for all walkers.

Use a distance that represents the walk

Choose the actual walking route rather than the straight-line distance between two points. Detours, paths around a park, and the walk to and from the starting point can all change the total. If the route is out and back, include both directions in the distance you enter.

A measured step length makes the estimate more useful. Count your steps along a known distance at the pace you expect to use. If you normally walk the route slowly or with frequent turns, measuring only a fast, straight walk may give an overly long step length.

Compare a plan with a completed walk

You can use the result as a planning estimate, then compare it with your recorded count afterwards. A difference does not automatically mean either tool is broken. Trackers, distance measurements, and changing step lengths can each contribute. Use the steps-to-miles tool when you want to make the calculation in the other direction.

Steps for common distances

Used as a distance to steps calculator, the tool accepts miles or kilometres. At a 30-inch step, 2 miles in steps (walking, not running) is about 4,224 and a 5K is about 6,562. The table below lists whole-mile distances and common race lengths at that example step length. Shorten the step and the counts rise: at 26 inches, two miles is 4,874 steps. Enter your measured step length above and the calculator does the conversion for any distance in miles or kilometres.

A few useful answers

Miles to steps: questions, answered.

How many steps are in five miles?

With a 30-inch step length, five miles are approximately 10,560 steps. Enter your own step length for a more personal estimate.

Can I use the calculator for running?

The distance arithmetic works with any measured step length, but a walking measurement should not be reused as a running measurement. This site's time and energy context is designed for walking.

Why is the result rounded?

Step counts are displayed as whole numbers. Rounding does not remove the much larger real-world uncertainty caused by variations in your gait and route measurement.

How many steps is 2 miles walking?

About 4,224 steps at a 30-inch step, or 4,874 at a 26-inch step. Two miles is 126,720 inches; divide by your step length in inches.
