A quick reference for familiar counts

Steps and distance conversion chart

Compare step counts with miles and kilometres. Every distance in this chart uses the same clearly stated step length.

Chart distances use a 30-inch step length, equivalent to 76.2 cm

One set of assumptions, clearly shown

This chart uses an illustrative step length of 30 inches, or 76.2 centimetres. It is a reference for understanding the arithmetic, not a population average or a claim about your gait. Multiply any step count by that length to find the corresponding distance, then convert the result into miles or kilometres.

For example, 1,000 steps at this length cover 0.762 km, or about 0.47 miles. At 5,000 steps the distance is 3.81 km, or about 2.37 miles. At 10,000 steps it is 7.62 km, or about 4.73 miles. The relationship is proportional because the chart keeps step length constant.

Read rounded values as estimates

The chart rounds distances for readability. If you multiply a rounded distance back into steps, you may see a small difference. The calculators retain the underlying values during the calculation and round the final display. This avoids carrying unnecessary rounding through intermediate steps.

In practice, differences in step length usually matter more than the final decimal place. Your footfalls can vary with speed, terrain, and the type of walking you do. A whole-day step count includes more variation than a single steady walk.

Make the reference your own

For a personalised result, use the steps-to-miles or steps-to-kilometres calculator and enter your measured step length. If you have a known route distance, the reverse tools estimate its step count. Use the measurement guide if you are unsure how to find the length of one step without confusing it with a two-step stride.

A few useful answers

Conversion chart: questions, answered.

Is this a personalised chart?

No. It is a fixed reference using a 30-inch, or 76.2 cm, step length. Enter your own measurement in a calculator for a personalised estimate.

Why are the mile values not round numbers?

A mile contains 63,360 inches. Dividing a step distance by that exact conversion factor usually produces a decimal result.

Can I print the chart?

Yes. Use the print control or your browser's print command. Check the print preview before printing or saving it as a PDF.
