Estimate the steps in a kilometre

Enter the distance you plan to walk and your measured step length. The calculator expresses both in matching units, then divides distance by step length. The result is an estimated number of footfalls across the whole route, counting both left and right feet.

At the example step length of 76.2 centimetres, one kilometre is approximately 1,312 steps. Five kilometres are approximately 6,562 steps. These numbers change when you adjust the length of a step. They are examples to explain the calculation, rather than fixed conversion rules.

Plan the whole distance

A route distance should include the portion you expect to walk. Remember the return trip if you are walking out and back. On a loop, check that the quoted distance includes any walk from your starting point to the loop itself. Small extra sections can add up over repeated laps.

For a better estimate, measure your step length under comparable conditions. A comfortable walk on a flat path will not necessarily match a walk through crowds or over rough ground. If you only have a rough step-length estimate, treat the output with the same level of precision.

Use the result as a planning guide

An estimated count can help connect a known route with a step goal. It is not a promise that your device will record that exact number. Some trackers infer steps from movement, while the route distance may come from a different measurement method. After the walk, compare the count and distance over several sessions before changing your step-length input.
